Introduction: I received a surprise package in the mail a bit more than a month ago, all the way from Mumbai, India. I immediately knew that it was sent to me by Allo. To my surprise there was the latest and greatest DigiOne Signature Player, fully assembled, neatly packed inside. I personally own the original first generation DigiOne that was my first purchase from Allo. I took my time with this one and put it through its paces; here is my review of the new DigiOne Signature from Allo.

The headings are clear and if you are familiar or an expert on some of the topics, please feel free to skip ahead. I tried to cater for readers of all experience levels. What is this DigiOne thing, and what does it actually do?

The DigiOne products from Allo. Thus, the output of the DigiOne is not analog audio but still in the digital form and needs to be converted to something you can amplify and actually listen to.

Much like what a traditional CD player does when you use the digital audio output signal to your Home Theatre AVR or integrated amplifier. This enables you to play your massive collection of computer audio files to your HiFi from a low powered, acoustically silent palm size computer. In a neat, small and pretty enclosure, you get the Raspberry Pi computer and the DigiOne add-on component boards that is plugged in directly to the Raspberry Pi.

The DigiOne receives a data signal from the Raspberry Pi at the bottom and works its magic to deliver an astonishingly good measuring SPDIF digital audio signal that you can feel confident about and feed that to your high-end HiFi equipment that you cherish so much. To achieve this high-quality signal, timing of the bits needs to be precise and there must be little to no other electrical noise mixed in with the signal that could cause distortion or confusion within the DAC.

The latest iteration of the DigiOne product line, the DigiOne Signature, does this in a number of ways. Where the Pi and the DigiOne Signature boards needs to interact, they have implemented the hardware to galvanically isolate the ground and signal conductors between them. They have gone further to discard the data clocking from the Raspberry Pi, and then re-clock the data signals received by its own high quality onboard NCK clocks to ensure ultra-low jitter Allo claims less than femtoseconds timing of the bits that are sent to your DAC.

There are more technical details given in the DigiOne Signature manual. In essence they strived to reconstruct the digital audio signal in the purest and accurate way possible and still provide value to the customer.

Most of the time it involves loading the system onto a SD card, plug everything in and powering it on, and then wait and follow the instructions on a web interface.

These systems are usually developed and well documented by users, for users. The Raspberry Pi online community is very large and very helpful.

The Raspberry Pi has no moving parts, which means it makes no acoustical noise and generates less electrical noise. Nothing else is needed to be plugged in to do all you need. And then it uses very little power and run from a 5V source. There is not much to lose.

Given the additional board and taller stature, the Signature Player requires a new case, with only acrylic available as of this review. These upgrades come at a price, unsurprisingly. A similarly equipped DigiOne Signature Player, including a second, standard power supply, is almost double the cost of the original DigiOne Player. This is assuming an acrylic case for both, since an aluminum case is not yet available for the Signature.

I expect the difference stems from Ethernet having isolation as a standard feature.

I should mention that my Pi now resides in a very well made aluminum case from Allo.

Its funky looking with bouncy vibration absorbing feet, the case acts as a heatsink via a clever metal web that sit between the Pi and DigiOne. Maybe this case will especially suit those who apply special feet and weights to the Pi to damp vibrations.

I immediately had music playing with no fuss or bother. But then…. I now heard a cleaner and smoother sound; compared with the similarly powered Pi I felt the USBridge was one level higher due to extra depth that that I was hearing.

This was a useful difference even if not being hugely significant. However we are not finished yet…. Please bear in mind this is all relative. I like to ring the changes. I now heard greater depth, resolution was good, there was with better defined placement and greater separation between instruments. This is a genuinely high quality sound. The Ordo is decent enough linear power supply with variable voltage.

I believe it to be similar to a power supply more widely sold under the Muse brand. The USB card was powered by the superior Sbooster linear power supply so this meant that I had the better linear power supply working on the more critical USB electronics.

Whereas the USB power supply certainly does matter. Now onto to what I heard with the dual power supplies. My very initial impression was of a more forceful and dynamic sound. Yes the sound was bolder, more dynamic and importantly I could more easily follow each individual musical strand or instrument.

Let's discuss about DACS! Try "usb:audio" in "output device" no in Dac mode, this is only i2s dac. If your dac usb is connected to usbridge and you do not see it in "output device "something is wrong in your configuration. I advise you to start configuration from the beginning, you may not have done something basic.

Here I provide a bit of technical background on DSD. DoP has a big advantage, no driver. The limit is the maximum transmission speed. On the other hand the native DSD transmission pushes the speed beyond, but requires a driver. For DSD a 48 kHz variant of DSD uses sigma-delta modulation. DSD64 is 1-bit with a 2. DSD is 5. Each OS will provide a website for you to access and control the device for music playback, so you'll need to hook it up over ethernet or configure its WiFi adapter to get to the web GUI, configure your music storage location, and start playing music.

That transport happened to be the old school Theta Data III CD player, which I purchased at the recommendation of a few friends that owned one themselves. Nonetheless, I got the inevitable itch to try something, anything, new against the D and wanted to see if the DigiOne might be a readily accessible, affordable product I could recommend to almost anyone in the hobby.

That, and the D is purposely built, inside and out, for digital audio. Still, the D was all I had on hand, and it served as my reference point. If nothing else, I thought it would just be a fun comparison, and sometimes the budget newcomer surprises you. I went in with a clean slate on my mind. I hooked the DigiOne Player up, let it boot, and… it worked. Yep, it just worked. It took a moment to hunt down the login credentials, but it was no major struggle.

The web GUI was simple but offered quick and easy settings for the device and applications, such as O! MPD and the Roon Bridge. Roon found the DigiOne Player immediately with absolutely zero fuss. Truth be told, this was my first time using Roon. I was quite pleased at how seamless it was getting everything up and running with the Allo DigiOne Player. In just a short few minutes, I had my storage loaded, and my music came to life over Roon and through my rig moments later.

MPD with some locally stored music. MPD found the files just fine, but despite my best efforts, I simply ran into error after error with no music playback to show for it. With moOde, I had no issues loading and playing my music. I found the interface intuitive and appreciated the depth of system options available. I manually installed the Roon Bridge with that OS, which similarly worked seamlessly as it had with DietPi out of the box.

The DigiOne had some expected tradeoffs with its usability, seeing it is utilizing the Raspberry Pi. That said, I believe these tradeoffs are well worth the effort given the asking price.
